Getting help with homelessness in an emergency

If you do not have a place to stay tonight and need emergency accommodation, there may be help available.

If you are at risk of becoming homeless, call the Shelter helpline on 0808 800 4444.

If you are concerned about your mental well-being or are experiencing suicidal thoughts, please contact the Samaritans on 116 123.

  • How to contact your local authority.
  • Non-serving family members facing eviction from SFA.

Getting help from your Local Authority

It is critical to contact your Local Authority. They will advise you on the help you are entitled to.

Find your Local Council on the GOV.UK website.

Local authorities have a legal duty to assist people who are experiencing homelessness.

Guidance for non-serving family members facing eviction from SFA

Service Family Accommodation is provided to members of the Armed Forces Community who are married, in a civil partnership or have children. If your relationship breaks down and you separate from the Service Personnel, your entitlement to SFA will come to an end.

If you have been served your 93-day notice for eviction, you will be able to ask the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) for a Certificate of Cessation of Entitlement to Occupy SFA to in turn apply as homeless to your local council before the end of the eviction period.

Find more information about applying as homeless, and receiving housing support, before leaving Armed Forces housing, on the RBL Knowledge Base website.

Support from the Royal British Legion

The Royal British Legion (RBL) is here for people in the Armed Forces community experiencing homelessness. We’re here to help you get back on your feet as well as refer you to partner organisations who can provide any specialist support you might need.

We might be able to support you if you are street homeless or sleeping rough by:

  • advocating for your rights and needs
  • helping you access local support in your area
  • coming with you to meetings
  • ensuring local authorities are meeting statutory and legal requirements
