  • How to get in touch.

What is SVR?

Scottish Veterans Residences (SVR) is a charity offering accommodation and support to ex-Service personnel in need in Scotland. Since its formation in 1910, SVR has looked after more than 60,000 veterans.

Now, SVR has three sites in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee, with either single occupancy rooms or flats - all with a wide range of communal facilities. SRV can offer 127 en-suite rooms, 30 supported flats and 46 independent affordable rental flats across the three cities.

Who is eligible for support from SVR?

Although SVR primarily helps veterans returning to Scotland, it has also assisted UK Armed Forces personnel of various nationalities.

These range from elderly veterans who for any reason find themselves unable to maintain their tenancy in rented accommodation to Early Service Leavers coming straight from the Services.

What support can SVR provide?

SVR helps veterans experiencing homelessness in many ways, not just by giving them a place to stay. As well as funding and running supported housing, SVR also help its residents take up new hobbies and education opportunities and even offers its own activities at its residences.

Supported housing

SRV provides supported housing for veterans across three main sites.

This includes supported housing at:

  • Whitefoord House in Edinburgh's Royal Mile, with 85 fully furnished single en-suite rooms
  • Rosendael in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, with 44 fully furnished en-suite rooms
  • Bellrock Close in Glasgow, a complex of 30 one-bedroom flats.

Transitional Support Programme

SVR's Transitional Support Programme is delivered at Bellrock Close in Glasgow. Each veteran receives assistance from a dedicated key worker and the support team. Help is given for accessing services such as health, welfare benefits, education and employment up to the point the resident is ready to move on.

Housing Support

All SVR residences provide a housing support service in addition to accommodation and leisure facilities. The focus is on enabling people to achieve or maintain independent living and achieve their potential.

The service provides:

  • Help with income maximisation, including applying for benefits
  • Access to education, training and employment
  • Ways to access leisure time and social activities
  • Links to community networks, volunteering and local services
  • Signposting to specialist services for alcohol and drug dependency, as well as counselling
  • Help in moving back to mainstream housing.

There are also general needs flats for veterans at the three main locations, with additional residences in Gilmerton Road in Edinburgh. These are rented at an affordable rate, but with a waiting list.

There is a charge for accommodation (including food and utilities) which is primarily met by Housing Benefit / Universal Credit combined with a small personal contribution, based on personal circumstances.
