Poppy Trek
Take on Poppy Trek and hike to England’s highest war memorial at the summit of Scafell Pike in the stunning Lake District.
You have the choice of two iconic routes: summit Scafell Pike or, brand-new for 2022, summit Scafell’s neighbouring mountain Great Gable.
Choose your summit
Day one – Summit Scafell Pike
Date: Saturday 13 August 2022
England’s highest mountain, towering at 963-metres, this hike is approximately 9 miles, and our most challenging trek.
The summit offers breath-taking views and an opportunity to share a moment’s reflection at England’s highest war memorial. After time for a minute’s silence, you’ll descend to a hero’s welcome and collect a unique finishers’ medal.
Difficulty level: Challenging
Summiting Scafell Pike involves a tough, steep hike, and so a good basic level of fitness is required, and we recommend that you complete a training plan. There are areas of steep mountain paths which will require you to scramble over uneven and rocky terrain. There can be high winds especially around the summit.
Estimated time to complete: 7-8 hours approx.
Day two – Summit Great Gable
Date: Sunday 14 August 2022
This trek will pass stunning scenery and picturesque mountain views as you hike approximately 6 miles up the Great Gable Mountain and reach the 886-metre summit.
At the summit of Great Gable, there is The Fell & Rock Climbing Club 1914-1918 War Memorial. You’ll stop to take in the beautiful panoramic views and observe a minute’s silence to reflect on the sacrifices the Armed Forces make on our behalf. You will then return to a hero’s welcome and collect a unique finishers’ medal.
Difficulty level: Moderately challenging
Though slightly less difficult than Scafell Pike summit, this is a demanding challenge in its own right and we recommend following the training plan. It’s a steep climb as you summit Great Gable which involves crossing grassy and rocky mountain paths. At times it will be loose underfoot, and you may find some slopes a little more demanding than others.
Estimated time to complete: 5-6 hours approx.
