Netherlands Liberation Trail 2025

Pedal through the Liberation of the Netherlands: A Historic Tour to Freedom, filled with Commemoration and Camaraderie.

A unique event offers more than just a scenic ride; it’s a tour through time, with 3 days of pedalling with purpose; in the cycling capital of the world. This is a chance to immerse yourself in Allied Forces’ history and Dutch culture, honour heroes, whilst celebrating the victory and liberation of the Netherlands.

Ride with us as we join our North Sea Neighbours in pedalling through the Netherlands’ historic journey and celebrate the nation’s official Liberation Day, a final milestone in the lead up to the much anticipated 80th anniversary of VE day.

Itinerary and route summary

Day 1: Travel

St Pancras International – Nijmegen (via Amsterdam) 

Optional: Nijmegen Sunset March

Day 2: Cycling

Nijmegen – Nijmegen (approx. 118km, 545m)

Starting from Nijmegen, we’ll follow the path of the Rhineland Offensive, the pivotal final battle for Liberation of the Netherlands. Cycling through beautiful landscapes, we will visit Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery before heading south to Ysselsteyn German war cemetery with a highlight stop at the Overloon Museum.

Day 3: Cycling

Nijmegen – Arnhem (approx. 73.8km, 438m)

This day will follow the key landing sites of the Airborne divisions that were pivotal in securing freedom. We will visit the inspirational Freedom Museum followed by lunch spent in Nijmegen.

Day 4: Cycling and celebrating

Arnhem – Wageningen (approx. 72.3km, 404m)

The final day of cycling perfectly rounds up our historic tour as we ride into Wageningen (known as Liberation town), following the path of British Airborne Troops. The tour will culminate with the Liberation Day Festival, a Dutch annual fete, commemorating victory and freedom of the nation, known as the largest liberation festival in the country.

To conclude the festivities, dinner will be served in the vibrant courtyard of the iconic Hotel de Wereld, the location where the surrender papers were signed by the Germans, ending the war in the Netherlands. If you choose to Fundraise, a proportion of your fundraising will go towards covering the cost of your place in the event. Please ensure this is clearly communicated to anyone who donates towards your challenge.

For those who are residents of the Netherlands, you can choose an option that does not include travel, reducing the initial payment to £187. With this option, you will meet us in Nijmegen on the evening of Day 1 and depart from Wageningen on Day 5.

FAQs

Can I join on my own?

Yes, of course! Many of our supporters sign up for the challenge as an individual - this is a fantastic way to meet new friends. Just leave the team name blank when you register.

Can I join as part of a team?

Definitely! There’s no minimum or maximum size of team. When you register, make sure to add your team's name to ensure you are recognised as a team.

Are there any age restrictions to participate?

For safety reasons all participants must be aged over 18 at the start of the ride. Participants under the age of 18 at the start of the ride are subject to approval of the events team and they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

What sort of bike do I need?

A standard hybrid, road bike or E-bike is suitable for this challenge.

We actively encourage E-bikes for this challenge. Riders will need to ensure responsibility for E-Bike charging, facilities will be available.

What fundraising support will I receive?

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive a welcome email containing lots of information and advice about raising money for the Royal British Legion. In addition, the RBL team are on hand to support you every step of the way!

How do I go about raising money online?

When you register for the event your online fundraising page will be set up automatically.

Can we fundraise as a team?

Yes. This is very easy online, if you create a team when you register for the event team your online team page will be set up automatically. If you are joining a team that has already been created, you’ll be added to this team page.
