Poems for Remembrance with Tomfoolery

In September, poet and writer Tomfoolery (Tomos Roberts) worked with the Royal British Legion and the National Literacy Trust to deliver two immersive poetry workshops for Key Stage 2 pupils, exploring the meaning of Remembrance through his new poem Lasting Silence.

In these inspiring sessions, Tomfoolery used Lasting Silence as a prompt to help pupils reflect on what we value today and why we pause each year to remember. He guided them through poetry writing techniques — like creating imagery, rhythm and personal expression. The sessions ended with a live Q&A.

Watch the workshops

The workshops were delivered live and are now freely accessible on the National Literacy Trust’s YouTube channel. They are ideal for use in the classroom as part of your Remembrance learning, English lessons or PSHE reflections.

  • Watch the workshop for 9–11 year olds.

Classroom resources

Supporting the videos is a downloadable activity pack produced in partnership with the National Literacy Trust. These resources help pupils to develop their own poems of Remembrance, linking personal responses with the collective act of remembering. They support English and PSHE at Key Stage 2.

  • Download the accompanying Remembrance poetry learning activities on National Literacy Trust’s website.

Why Poems for Remembrance?

Poetry offers a unique way for pupils to engage with Remembrance — it gives voice to emotions, prompts reflection, and connects personal experiences with our shared history. By using Tomfoolery’s poem and the workshop recordings, pupils not only explore poetic language but also deepen their understanding of why we remember.
