Marathon Runner Secures Guinness World Record as Giant Poppy

49-Year-old Owen Willis defied the heat to set a new Guinness World Record for the “Fastest marathon dressed as a three-dimensional plant (male)” category at the 2018 London Marathon as he donned a giant Poppy in aid of The Royal British Legion and SSAFA.

It was the hottest London Marathon on record and Owen had to complete his run in under five hours, he managed to finish with just 21 seconds to spare in the scorching temperatures.

He said: “I feel totally amazing. I was going to wear it even if I had to walk to the finish line, but I took onboard lots of water and luckily a bit of tail wind helped me get to the end”

Owen chose the Legion and SSAFA after seeing firsthand the valuable support the charities give to ex-service personnel and their families. His day job at the Home Improvement Agency involves working on life changing adaptations to their homes.

“The support has been incredible. People were shouting come on Mr Poppy and high fiving me. I really want to raise £5,000 for these deserving charities and I’m going to attempt to the York Marathon later in the year, once again as a Giant Poppy.”
