The First World War saw the industrialisation of warfare, the first tanks and warplanes and the founding of women’s services. It claimed the lives of more than one million service personnel from the UK and Commonwealth.
The conflict between Allied and Axis powers drew in nearly every nation in the world. The most destructive conflict in history mobilised some 120 million people, including 12 million from the UK and Commonwealth.
The era saw the ideological struggle between East and Western-aligned blocs, ushering in new conflicts and the nuclear arms race. Further tensions and wars arose during decolonisation and over sovereignty.
