A woman receiving funding from the Royal British Legion to study abroad

For those who would like to continue studying after university, we fund a unique opportunity for postgraduates to study in South Korea.

Our postgraduate scholarship to South Korea is an innovative scheme that offers an opportunity for a graduate from any discipline to live and study in South Korea for up to two years.

The winner of the 2018-2020 Scholarship was Miss Georgia McDonnell, who was looking to study at Seoul University.

Previous winners have taken degrees as diverse as Physics, Chinese, Japanese, Politics, Economics and Law in British universities before choosing post-graduate courses to study in Korea.

The scholarship was established in memory of those who gave their lives during the Korean War (1950-53) and aims to strengthen the relationship between Britain and South Korea. Funded by an endowment from Samsung Europe and administered by us, the scheme has been running since 1995 with students from all walks of life taking part.

The scholarship is a fixed sum and can be used to cover:

  • An intensive Korean language course in the UK before departure
  • An open return flight to South Korea
  • University course fees
  • Contribution to accommodation costs
  • One return flight to the UK during the study period
  • Ancillary expenses related to the cost of living (via a regular stipend paid to the awardee)
  • Postgraduate courses are conducted in English.

Who can apply?

The scholarship is open to members of the public, with a preference for those with a family connection with the Armed Forces.
