D-Day veteran Jack Smith

Jack Smith joined the Royal Marines in 1942 when he was only 17. Two years later he was one of thousands of Allied troops taking part in D-Day.

As a pilot of a landing craft, Jack played a key role in helping British Forces land on the beaches of Normandy on 6 June 1944.

As a 19-year-old I was out there with my gun and heard all the noises overhead, with shots being fired.
