Helmshore

The Royal British Legion is recognised as the national custodian of Remembrance.

Since the 100th Anniversary of the start of WW1 the Branch Padre Rev. Gerald Higham, has been conducting a service at St.Thomas' Church to commemorate each of the fallen from the local area in the month in which they died.

This will continue until 2019 when the anniversary of the last of those who died is marked. Additionally, a wooden cross will be placed for each name at the Helmshore War Memorial.

It has been noted that there is a discrepancy between the names on the War Memorial, those listed on the Church plaque and the official war records. Work is currently in progress to consolidate the full list. Once completed it is the intention of the Branch to ensure that all names are incorporated onto the War Memorial.

Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday in November, is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.
