Rugby for Heroes

Rugby players made a significant contribution to the allied efforts during the First World War with more than 130 international players and many thousands more club players giving the ultimate sacrifice. In this Armistice Centenary year, we want to stand together with our partners The Royal British Legion to say Thank You and to celebrate the legacy those players gave us and the values they lived by that continue to be integral to our society today.

As well as all those who served and sacrificed during the war, we also want to say Thank You to those who returned home from the war to rebuild the nation we live in today. The challenges that they would have faced in the transition back to civilian life share many parallels with our veterans today. At Rugby for Heroes, we work with the rugby community to raise funds and awareness for military personnel who are making the transition to civilian life. We are committed to providing financial and personal support, to help individuals overcome the many challenges that this transition presents.

This Armistice Centenary year, it is our ambition to bring together the rugby and forces communities. Led by patron Mike Tindall MBE, we are embarking on a series of commemorative events - collectively known as the Armistice 100 Trilogy - to mark this important anniversary. The events kick off with a three day, 300-mile bike ride from Twickenham Stadium to Compiegne, France, culminating in a commemorative rugby match at Compiegne RCC. A remembrance dinner will also be held at Twickenham Stadium, hosted by TV presenter and charity ambassador Nick Knowles, who will be joined by special guests from the world of rugby. A fitting end to our series of events will be a remembrance match on Sunday 11th November at Richmond Athletic Ground – the home of Richmond FC and London Scottish FC, two of the oldest rugby clubs in the world – between a Rugby for Heroes International XV and a French Legends XV.
