Forces Wives Challenge: Why we're supporting military wives in climbing the highest volcano in the world

The team of Parachute Regiment and Airborne forces wives are seeking to climb Ojos del Salado in Chile, standing at 6893m.

The Forces Wives Challenge is an exciting new initiative that seeks to unite the wives and partners of Armed Forces personnel through adventure and challenge.

It strives to combat loneliness and isolation that can be so prevalent in the Armed Forces Community by providing opportunities to experience the same teamwork, adventure, sense of belonging and enjoyment their partners experience as a member of the armed forces.

With support from The Royal British Legion a team of wives and partners are departing the UK for Chile on 23 February to climb Ojos del Salado – the highest volcano in the world.

Meet some of the team

Heather

Heather founded Forces Wives Challenge in 2017 after deciding she wanted to organise a major expedition for the Forces Wives community. After serving in the Army for 10 years, she left in 2014 and wanted to give something back to the community of wives and partners.

"I thought I knew how tough it was for forces families but it wasn’t until I left and saw things from both sides of the fence that my eyes were opened to this dynamic, resilient community that sacrifice so much in support of the Armed Forces."

Dawn

Dawn works as a paramedic. After moving with her husband to her first married posting she began to feel isolated and alone, but found Forces Wives Challenge was a great way of meeting like-minded people and signed up for the challenge of climbing Ojos del Salado.

"I cannot wait to show how strong we have become both mentally and physically. I want to be able to prove to myself I am capable of more than I give myself credit for and inspire other Forces Wives to do that same."

Paula

Paula lives with her husband Andrew and two children Lyla and Hudson. She got involved with Forces Wives Challenge because it promised to take her out of her comfort zone.

"I can’t wait to see just how far we can push ourselves."
