Carlisle Poppy Appeal Organiser Wins Pride of Britain Award

Margaret Wadsworth has been named ITV Fundraiser of the Year after raising almost £1 million for the Legion.

Our very own Margaret Wadsworth, was named ITV Fundraiser of the Year at the Pride of Britain Awards last week after raising almost £1 million during her time as a Legion fundraiser.

Along with her husband Colin, Margaret has been raising money for, and raising awareness of the Legion through their work at the Carlisle and Stanwix branch for the past 12 years.

She was presented with the award by Sir Cliff Richard and presenter Rochelle Humes at a start studded ceremony in London ahead of 16 other regional finalists.

On her win Margaret said: “Well I didn’t actually know until it was announced on the night so it was a big shock.

“I was amazed that I was nominated for the border region candidate and I was surprised to win that, but on Monday night at the Pride of Britain I was just stunned to hear my name called out.”

Margaret was nominated by Carlisle and Stanwix Branch Secretary Tony Parrini who said that the couple deserved recognition for their fundraising.

Last month she was surprised by her colleagues at a ceremony where she was presented with a regional award, Fundraiser of the Year for the Border regions, which led her to her national win last week.

Margaret became involved with the Legion after husband Colin joined their local branch after leaving the Army in the 1970s.

“As an ex-serviceman, he joined the local branch of the Legion after he came out of the forces, and carried on from there,” Margaret says.

“I saw the scale of what was involved and felt he needed help to do it all, so I started helping him and became assistant Poppy Appeal Organiser.”

Together they help organise the regions Poppy Appeal which see them distributes over 900 boxes of poppies each year, last year raising over £116,000.

As well as fundraising the couple also visit schools and organisations to raise awareness of the Legion and the support it gives to the armed forces community.

“We also encourage fundraising by going out to schools and organisations and tell them all about what the Legion does and try to enlist their support.”

The Pride of Britain Awards ceremony will be shown on ITV on Tuesday 6 November at 8pm.
