Widnes Remembers

The Widnes Royal British legion and Widnes Royal Artillery Association in partnership with Halton Borough Council held an event in Victoria Park on Saturday 8th September 2018 to commemorate the end of the First World War 100 years ago this year on 11th November 1918 and say Thank You to the WW1 generation.

The event enlisted children from the schools of Widnes, Cronton and Hale, as these were districts of Widnes in those dark years. The schools participating were given 32/34 names of the men named on the Cenotaph and Memorial Stones in Victoria Park. The children made up boards with the names of the fallen and paraded with them in the park to the Cenotaph and lay them in the Cenotaph area. The parade also had Veterans, Mercian Regiment, Cadets, Scouts and Guides taking part.

There were also a selection of fun activities, including a funfair, an assault course, flight simulator, music and various stalls from local charities. There was also a a timeline and photographs of some of the men from Widnes who never came home after the First World War.
