THE FOOTBALL WORLD SAYS THANK YOU TO THE FIRST WORLD WAR GENERATION

The football world has come together to support The Royal British Legion led Thank You movement. The Premier League, English Football League, FA, Women’s Super League, and the National Army Games of Remembrance are proudly saying Thank You to the First World War generation by using commemorative medals for the coin toss- at matches in November.

Referees will be using special commemorative medals during the start of match coin toss in November fixtures leading up to Remembrance Sunday.  This is football’s way of supporting The Royal British Legion’s movement to say Thank You to the entire First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world. Post- match, the medals will be auctioned off to help support the Legion.

The medals have been made by the Legion’s long term corporate partner The Westminster Collection. They have a 40mm diameter antique finish base metal medal. On one side is the Legion logo, the other is the Thank You Movement logo, and along the side of the coin it says ‘Football Remembers’.

However, this is just one part of a feast of football involvement in the Thank You movement. The Royal British Legion will soon be releasing a Thank You film made in collaboration with the England men’s and women’s teams and also in collaboration with the Welsh men’s team, and the England women’s international against Sweden on the 11th November is being designated a Thank You game.

Catherine Davies, Head of Remembrance at the Royal British Legion, said: “We owe the First World War generation a huge debt of gratitude for helping shape the world as we know it today.  Not only the 1.2m British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who lost their lives on the battlefield, but also those who kept the home front going. Football played a vital role during the First World War both at the Front and at home and we are delighted with the support we have had for the Thank You movement from across the world of football.  We are very grateful also to the support of the Westminster Collection in helping us say thank you at this poignant time as we remember the centenary of the end of the First World.”

Chairman of The Westminster Collection, Stephen Allen, said: “We are delighted to be an official Thank You movement partner, supporting The Royal British Legion with their First World War commemorations throughout this centenary year including the remembrance weekend football matches. The work done by the Legion to preserve the memory of the fallen and support the future of the living is vital, and we are extremely proud to continue our long-term partnership”.

Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of the English Football League, said: “The First World War is a momentous part of our collective history and it’s important that we pay tribute on this significant anniversary to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“Around the country many players, staff and fans connected to professional clubs gave so much and the commemorative coin toss represents a fitting tribute, as part of an array of Football Remembers activity being undertaken by EFL Clubs and of course the wider football family.”.
