Will the rides suit me?

Firstly, our bike rides are aimed at keen amateurs - it is not competitive and you do not need to have done anything like this before. However, we always recommend a sensible training programme leading up to the ride - as you will enjoy the event so much more if you are properly prepared.

Up to 300 people can take part in Pedal to Paris which is designed for a broad range of experience, speeds and stamina. Cyclists are divided into three speed groups - fast, medium and social - so first-timers who can average 12mph are very welcome.

For up to 100 people, Bike to Brussels is aimed at the medium range cyclist who can manage 14 mph.

Whatever your speed, age or experience, you will receive the same level of superb support from the Legion team, mechanics and sport therapists.

How fit do I have to be?

You should have a basic level of fitness with the committment to prepare properly for this adventure - cycling a few miles to and from work is not going to be enough preparation for either Pedal to Paris or Bike to Brussels. If you have any queries about your fitness to do either ride, please consult your doctor.

What sort of bike do I need?

We have seen almost every type of bike used but a good standard road model should be sufficient for your needs - please see Points worth remembering for more details. Very experienced bike mechanics ensure the well being of your bike - they know pretty much everything there is to know and are happy to advise on any aspect of your bike and your relationship with it. There are numerous bike shops around the UK who have the experience to advise you.

What does the price include?

Our prices are as all-inclusive as possible and the relevant event page gives specific details. All your meals, snacks, refreshments during the riding day, accommodation, ferries and return travel to the start point are included. Bar bills are not included so it is advisable to bring enough cash for your evening drinks.

The price does NOT include the costs of travel to and from the start points, accommodation before the ride begins, spares that are needed for your bike during the ride (although they will be fitted for free), holiday insurance or insurance for your bike whilst in use or in transit or storage. You will also need to find your own way from the hotels in Paris and Brussels to the station for your return trip.

How much spending money will I need?

You should only need cash for incidentals such as bar drinks in the evening or gifts to take home.

How do I follow the route?

Although you will be sent details of the route shortly before your ride starts, these events are fully accompanied by a team of motorcycle outriders who will be guiding you the entire way and, where appropriate, local police escorts.

How much luggage should I bring & how do I transport it?

We ask that you bring one bag only which should be no heavier than 15 kg. Dress is casual and you will not need anything formal. Your bag will be carried for you each day on our luggage van and will be available to you each evening, either at your designated hotel or a central collection point.

May I join on my own?

Yes, of course. Although we do have groups/teams of friends, colleagues and families, many individuals take part and, in fact, have found this a great way to meet new friends.

What do I need to bring with me for cycling?

You do not need anything except essentials on your bike (especially not heavy bags of tools) and a small day pack that should be sufficient to carry personal items such as money, camera, sunscreen, a lightweight rainproof jacket etc. Please see our Equipment page for more details.

How do I and my bike get back to the UK?

Cyclists return to the UK by Eurostar arriving at St Pancras International Station. Your bikes will be packed, loaded and returned by road to the UK for collection at a central point by you or your designated representative.

When do I have to submit my sponsorship money?

We ask that all sponsorship monies are sent to us no later than eight weeks after the last day of the ride.
