Poppy Appeal Golf Classic

The Royal British Legion is known to millions for the work it does helping those who have served their country, not only in the Second World War but in conflicts since, and even ongoing as we see so tragically in the news.

To raise funds for the Legion, we organise the Poppy Appeal Golf Classic, where we ask golf clubs around the country to hold a day - possibly an autumn monthly medal - in aid of the Poppy Appeal. It can be the entire Club, Senior's Section, Ladies' Section or whatever the Club fancies - everyone is welcome.

Poppy Appeal Golf Classic MedalEach player receives a commemorative souvenir with the distinctive poppy logo and the winner in each Club or section receives a specially minted 'gold' medal.

If you already support this event, thank you, but if your Club is not involved please get in touch for details of how you can help - email peter.poppygolf@gmail.com.

How to enter

Poppygolf1.jpgTo enter your Club for the Poppy Appeal Golf Classic all you need do is send us, by email, the following information:

  • Name of Golf Club
  • Name, telephone and email address of the Organiser (or Club Secretary/Manager)
  • Proposed date of the tournament
  • Approximate number of players you anticipate (so that we can send you the correct number of commemorative souvenirs - though we are always happy to send more if you have extra players)
  • Format (whether individual, pairs or team - so that we can send you the correct number of 'gold' medals)

And it's that easy. Please email to - peter.poppygolf@gmail.com.

The day is organised annually and this was the tenth anniversary. Up to 30 teams can take part and this year's winners (pictured below with Anny Reid, Chairman of Gloucestershire County RBL, who presented the prizes) were Roger Grigg, Terry Tillotson, Peter Turner and Chris Drew. Very many thanks to all who took part, plus the Club and Ian Corbitt, who organised the entire day. If you want to play in 2012, Sunday 20 October is the date to put in your diary.

RBL Thailand raise £10,000 on Poppy Golf Day

The idea for a Poppy Golf Day came about over a beer in Tropical Bert's (the home of the Legion in Thailand) and we had the inaugural Poppy Day Golf in 2010. This day proved such a success that the next year was discussed and when we realised that 2011 was the 90th Birthday of The Royal British Legion it was decided that we would have Poppy Day Golf Tournaments in Pattaya, Korat, Chiang Mai and Bangkok all at the same time. Three went ahead due to flooding,  Bangkok was unable to play, and will be having their day belatedly on 5 February 2012 and it promises to be a cracker of a day.

Over 300 golfers managed to tee off at the set time in three locations around Thailand and thanks to our main sponsor the Royal Bank of Scotland supported by Royal London 360 and the MBMG Group we have already raised over £12,000 with one game yet to play. A fantastic day that will certainly become an annual event, we are already looking at adding the holiday island of Phuket within next year's event.
