Fundraising for the Legion London Poppy Day On Thursday 1 November, everyone in London was asked to help raise more £1 million in 12 hours during the capital's largest and most ambitious street fundraising event - London Poppy Day. While we didn't quite reach that magic number, thanks to your generosity an amazing £800,000 was collected. Some of London's most famous faces supported the London Poppy Day, which was launched by the Mayor on Tuesday. Covering 60 Tube and railway stations, over 2,000 collectors representing the Army, Navy, RAF and a host of city companies were at their posts at 70 Tube and mainline rail stations during the morning rush hour between 7am and 9am, over lunchtime, and during the evening rush hour (5pm-7pm). And in a first for the Poppy Appeal, Barclaycard donated 400 mobile card payment terminals across the capital so the public could make contactless donations using just their debit cards. There was lots of associated activity such as performances from the Military Wives Choir, a day of activities at Covent Garden, a team of Royal Marines abseiling down Broadgate Tower and 17 military bands around town. Transport for London joined in with poppy branding on TFL buses on routes 48, 54, 55 and 56, a Circle line train, an Overground train and Tube stations and bus shelters with the iconic voice of Barbara Windsor calling for donations throughout the Underground. HRH The Prince of Wales climbed aboard The Royal British Legion's London Poppy Day Routemaster bus to meet some of the ambassadors and collectors who lent their support to one of the most ambitious street collecting initiatives ever, including inspiring Olympic gold medallist rower and Royal Artillery Captain Heather Stanning. The Prince then greeted some of the Legion volunteers working in the Clarence House counting room keeping track of the one-day fundraising effort. The record-breaking total raised was £802,263! Thanks to everyone who participated and let's see if we can reach the £1 million mark next year!
