School children learningThe Royal British Legion School's Pack - 2009 / 2010

This School's Pack is designed to assist teachers to introduce specific themes into the classroom.  Although it primarily covers the History and Citizenship curricula, it can also be used to support literacy and aspects of PSHE and Religious Studies.  The pack should be used as a starting point for certain topics, or to inspire primary and secondary teachers to complementary routes on tackling these themes.

The six topics support the current areas of the National Curriculum for the following units:

  • History - Key Stages 1 and 2, Units 9, 13, 17 and 20.  Key Stage 3, The First and Second World Wars, including the Holocaust.
  • Citizenship - Key stage 1-4: The identities behind Britain today.  Understanding Human Rights.  Challenging racism and discrimination.  War, conflict and peace. Identity and diversity. Issues supporting rights and responsibilities.

This year we have produced a main pack and there are also six posters to generate activities about History and Citizenship both inside and outside the classroom.  We also produce a DVD/CD-Rom disk set to provide extra information, and this is released each September.

You can download the 2009/2010 School's Pack here.
A Welsh version of the 2009/2010 School's pack is also available.

Postcards to veterans

The Legion has produced four postcard designs for schools who would like to send a message to veterans in hospital, in their own home or in a Legion Care Home OR to a family that has suffered loss as a result of conflict.

Please download some or all of the 4 postcard designs shown here. They are A5 size and you will need to print them out on heavy card (double sided) if you wish to use the freepost address supplied (on the reverse of the postcard).

Poppy Travel for Schools

Poppy Travel is the travel arm of The Royal British Legion and have arranged specialist tours for many schools over the last 15 years.  Visits to real battlefields and war cemeteries provide students and teachers with an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom and become familiar with how conflict affected relatives, friends and communities.

Tours are planned to match your school's requirements and led by specialist guides, all of whom have experience of working with young people. Tours are being offered in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Southern Italy and Poland. Please check the website www.poppytravel.org.uk for suggested itineraries and new destinations or contact Poppy Travel for Schools at the details below.
