A night of forties fashion and frolics on the 6th Anniversary of D-Day
After the huge success of their previous events, Essence Communications hosted THE BLITZ PARTY on Saturday 6 June, a 1940s night that brimmed with community spirit, as well as raising money for The Royal British Legion. Coinciding with the 65th anniversary of D-Day, June's event was another fantastic night under the railway arches in Shoreditch remembering and honouring Britain's finest with 1940s music and dancing. The venue was transformed into a wartime East End air shelter, complete with sandbags, searchlights, blackout curtains, oil lamps and military bunk beds. Ration books replaced bar menus and scarce provisions lined the walls. Spread under two arches, the rooms hosted the UK's finest live swing bands, performers and DJs. Big band tunes played for funloving party girls who longed to share a Gin French cocktail with a handsome man in uniform. The Spitfire Bar served good old Kentish Ale and hearty food to hungry soldiers and another room projected original newsreels and wartime films, accompanied by live music. Ladies donned their lipstick and tea-dresses and drawn stockings. Gentlemen dusted off their medals and waved their Union Jacks with pride. The Blitz Party was London's hottest night on 6 June, where cocktails, dancing and neighbourly spirit were the order of the evening. A collection was held throughout the evening in aid of the Poppy Appeal and a fantastic £115.32 was raised. A big thank you to all at Essence Communications.
