To continue the memory of the sacrifices members of
our Armed Forces have made for us since World War I, the Royal Mint
has partnered with The Royal British Legion and has created a giant
Poppy mural made entirely of coins* incorporating the famous
Rudyard Kipling words 'Lest we Forget' as a timely reminder to the
nation, ahead of the Poppy Appeal launch.
The Poppy coin art, measuring 3 metres across, has been created
at The Royal British Legion's National Memorial Arboretum; the UK's
Centre of Remembrance in Staffordshire and took a team of three,
seven hours to produce using 12,000 coins.
The metal mural was created to encourage people to upload
lasting tributes on a specially created virtual memorial wall,
developed by the Royal Mint - www.celebratebritain.com. For every
tribute posted, the Royal Mint will donate £1 to The Royal British
Legion and a further 10% will be donated from every sale of its new
poppy medal, produced to commemorate Remembrance Day with a lasting
Dave Knight, Director of Commemorative Coins at the
Royal Mint said "It is important that people remember the
significance of Remembrance Day in Britain. We hope that by
giving people the opportunity to post photographs and tributes of
friends and family who served their country on our specially
created microsite, we ensure that their sacrifices are never
forgotten. This, along with the sale of our new medal, will help
raise much needed money to allow The Royal British Legion to
continue its important work."
Russell Thompson, Director of National Events and Fundraising at
The Royal British Legion commented on the partnership "We are
delighted that the Royal Mint has produced a Poppy medal and would
encourage people young and old to take a moment at 11am on November
11 to remember the people who have given their lives, so that we
can enjoy the freedom we have today. We welcome the tributes
on the virtual memorial wall, which will help to support people who
have served or who are serving in the armed forces."
