Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely KCB MC has been appointed as the new National President of The Royal British Legion.
Sir John has taken over the role from Air Marshal Ian Macfadyen CB OBE FRAeS who will be retiring from the post on 31 December 2008. Air Marshal Macfadyen, who recommended Sir John for the post of National President, is to take up the position of Honorary Inspector-General of The Royal Auxiliary Air Force.
Sir John will start in his new role next year. He has had an outstanding army career and has served in the Falklands War, Bosnia and in the Gulf.
Before his retirement in the summer, Sir John was Director of the Defence Academy in Oxfordshire which provides higher education for personnel in the British Armed Forces, the Civil Service and other government departments. He has also written many articles on the military and lectured on post-modern warfare.
Chris Simpkins, Director General of The Royal British Legion, said:

Sir John has received many awards during his army career, including, the Military Cross, the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service and the Legion of Merit. He said:
"It is a great honour to be appointed as National President of The Royal British Legion. The Legion is well known for safeguarding the welfare, interests and memory of the serving and ex-Service community and I am committed to continuing this important tradition."
