Leave a gift in your Will
You can help to safeguard the future of the Armed Forces community by leaving a gift in your Will. Remembering The Royal British Legion in your Will is a wonderful way to continue showing your support for the people helped by the Legion - serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans of all ages and their families.
The difference your gift could make
As the nation’s largest charity helping the Armed Forces community, welfare is at the heart of everything we do. The generous gifts left to us in Wills help the Legion to improve the lives of thousands of serving members of the Armed Forces, ex-Service people, their families and dependants.
In 2013-14, gifts in Wills provided an essential 20% of our income and enabled us to continue delivering and improving vital services, such as:
- Care homes and break centres
- Financial information, advice and guidance
- The journey for those leaving Service – retraining and independent living
- Compensation and bereavement support.
The name of every person who leaves a gift in their Will to the Legion is recorded in the Book of Remembrance on permanent display in our London headquarters.

Writing your Will
A Will is one of the simplest ways to safeguard the future of your family and friends. It is the best way to ensure that your wishes are followed and can help to reduce the worry for your loved ones at a very stressful time. After you’ve taken care of the people closest to you, a small gift in your Will could make a huge difference.
Download our Will information booklet for more information and suggested wording to include in your Will. Do not hesitate to contact us on 0808 802 8080 if you have any additional questions or require suggested templates.
We strongly recommend that you consult a solicitor or STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) qualified Will-writer when you make your Will, to ensure it is accurate and reflects your wishes.
As a legal document, your Will should be prepared professionally. It is advisable to have an up-to-date Will and to review it every few years and after any major changes in your life, such as marriage, divorce or births of children or grandchildren. The Law Society locator can help you find a local solicitor - you simply need to add your postcode.
Please note that the law on making Wills varies between the different countries and dependencies in the UK. See below for who to get in touch with:
England and Wales
Isle of Man
To save time with your solicitor, you can make a list of all your assets, including any savings, investments and your possessions to help you work out the value of your estate. Then consider who you want to benefit from your estate. Most people want to make sure their family are looked after and then consider leaving a gift to a favourite charity, such as the Legion. To further save time, it would also be useful to bring the charity’s address and registered charity number as seen in our suggested wording.
If you have already written your Will and wish to make a simple amendment, you can make a Codicil. This is an appendix to your existing Will which must be witnessed in exactly the same way and kept with the original.
Please contact us if you have any questions about writing your Will.

Guidance for executors
Our Legacy Team handles all legacies for the Legion, including those for the Poppy Appeal, branches, homes and counties, as well as for charities which fall under the Legion umbrella.
Our Legacy Officers are all qualified members of the Institute of Legacy Management and can guide you through every stage of administering our supporter’s estate so please contact us if you have any questions or, for general information, please visit the ILM website.
For private executors
As an executor of a Will you are uniquely placed to ensure that our supporter’s estate is administered in the way they have wished.
Did you know that charities are exempt from the payment of Inheritance Tax (IHT), Capital Gains Tax (CGT), and income tax?
In order to benefit from these exemptions and thereby maximise the value of the gift for the Legion left in a Will, please write to the Legion team to notify us of the gift and to request information on possible cost savings.
By working together during the administration, we can ensure that this generous gift to the Legion will have the greatest impact on the lives of the Armed Forces community.
For professional executors
As you will be aware, there are particular tax and procedural measures specific to charities as beneficiaries. Please contact us if you require any further information.
