'Recipes for Remembrance'
The Legion has been closely involved with two books being
published for Remembrancetide: '90 Years of Heroes' by Matt
Croucher; and 'Recipes for Remembrance', a children's baking
book. 'Poppy Day' by Amanda Prowse is another book being
published shortly which will also support The Royal British
Legion.
90 Years of Heroes
A celebration of the history of The Royal British Legion, this
commemorative book profiles 90 brave heroes - one for every year of
the Legion's existence from 1921 to 2011. Written by Matt
Croucher, who was awarded the George Cross for gallantry in
Afghanistan, the book is being published for Remembrancetide by
Collins and is available from 15 September.
Working in partnership with the Legion, and with exclusive
access to our archives, Matt has selected 90 heroes, detailing
their achievements as well as the evolution of the Legion.
The book is superbly illustrated, and includes well-known heroes
such as VC recipients Johnson Beharry and Tasker Watkins, as well
as less-known figures such as Rosemary Powell, the 96-year-old who
has been collecting for the Poppy Appeal since it began.
'This book is a fitting tribute to recognise . . . The Royal
British Legion. Long may the Legion stand shoulder to shoulder with
all who serve within our Armed Forces.'
Rt Hon David Cameron, Prime Minister
90 Years of Heroes will be available on thePoppy Shop and can be
ordered through Amazon, raising funds to support our welfare
work.
Recipes for Remembrance
The Legion has also launchedRecipes for Remembrance, a
pocket-sized baking book featuring recipes from children's baking
star Flossie Crums. The aim is to help families, schools and
particularly children to mark our 90th Anniversary Poppy Appeal,
while participating in and experiencing Remembrance.
Helen Hill, of the Legion's Learning Team, said: "As part
of our role as the national custodian of Remembrance, the Legion
reaches out to over two million children across the country each
year. We know from parents, teachers and most importantly the
children themselves, that current conflicts often trigger questions
about the role of those who serve our country and these don't just
get asked at school but at home too.
"As a result, we saw our landmark 90th birthday and Poppy Appeal
as a great way of using baking to gently introduce families with
children of 10 or younger to the importance of Remembrance where
children engage in a positive way."
Flossie Crums is the creation of Helen Nathan, who has written
three other baking-related books featuring the character. Together
with her brother Billie, Flossie explains the work of the Legion
and the role of the Poppy. Recipes for Remembrance unveils 10
new recipes with a Remembrance theme, such as 'Mini Poppy Cupcakes'
and a 'Welcome Home Cupcake Tower' for Servicemen and women
returning home from a tour of duty.
The book will be available from thePoppy Shop and through
theFlossie Crums website, and all of the profits will go to
supporting the work of the Legion.
Poppy Day
An original tale of love and war by Amanda Prowse,Poppy Day is
the story of an army wife, set in East London and Afghanistan.
Mandy Prowse is the wife of a serving soldier who wrote Poppy
Dayas a way to say 'thank you' to her extraordinary husband and his
colleagues who serve their country selflessly every day.
While this book is a work of fiction, Mandy understands life
beneath the uniform, what it's like to be the one left at home,
ticking off the days until your loved one returns, and what happens
when there is a knock on the door that every Forces' spouse, parent
and lover dreads...
All proceeds fromPoppy Day will support the work of The Royal
British Legion. It is available on Amazon and from thePoppy
Shop.
