Poppy Appeal 2011 -

LASTEST KENT POPPY APPEAL TOTAL IS: £1,012,444.70

SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH ALL WHO SERVE

Poppy Appeal Maidstone

The Royal British Legion 2011 Poppy Appeal in Kent is about standing shoulder to shoulder with our brave Armed Forces to support them today and for the rest of their lives.

Under the strapline 'Shoulder to Shoulder', the Kent Poppy Appeal was launched at County Hall today.  After pinning 90 large poppies onto the front of County Hall to help mark the start of the 90th ever Poppy Appeal, 6 ex-service men and women who have been helped by the Legion in the past, stood shoulder to shoulder with Poppy supporters.

Afterwards, during a simple ceremony hosted by the Chairman of KCC, Mrs Paulina Stockell, these ex-service men and women were formally presented the first poppies of the 2011 Appeal by Cadets from Sutton Valence Combined Cadet Force.

These men and women, veterans from conflicts past and present, then called upon the public to honour the fallen, and to care for the injured and their families, by wearing a Poppy too.  Geoff Simpson, County Manager for the Legion in Kent, went on to explain:

"These Veterans today have turned to the Legion for help, and it is through money raised from our annual Poppy Appeal that we were able to offer them the support they have needed to help put their lives back on track.  In Kent we will have responded to over 1300 similar requests for help in this year alone, and this number is likely to grow in light of the current conflicts.  More than £1.4 million is spent each week on the Legion's work to help our Armed Forces family, so every penny that people of Kent generously give to our Poppy Appeal collection is vitally important.  Please stand shoulder to shoulder with all who Serve by wearing a poppy this Remembrancetide."
