Kent's Poppy Appeal
Our Annual Poppy Appeal...
Our Annual Poppy Appeal collection during
Remembrancetide was kick started this year with a launch
ceremony at County Hall. under the banner of
SHOULDER TO SHOUDLER WITH ALL WHO
SERVE ', we continue to highlight the
need for support for the wounded and
bereaved of the
Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts - today and for the rest of their
lives. We called upon the public to honour the fallen, and to
care for the injured and their families, by wearing a Poppy.
Each year, in early November some
30,000 Legion volunteers take to the streets with poppies and
collecting boxes, raising millions of pounds for the Poppy
Appeal.
During last year's
Remembranctide period over 42 million Poppies
were distributed. This is a reflection of
the efficiency and dedication of our volunteers and
supporters. To give you some idea of the magnitude of
the enterprise, at the rate of distributing one Poppy per second,
it would take 16 months to distribute 42 million Poppies.
Our volunteers did it in 20 days.
Amazing.
For the 2010 Appeal, Kent raised
a truly incredible £1,135,204.67 and our volunteers are
working hard planning to try and beat this in 2011. as we hope
to show again how the good people of Kent stand shoulder to
shoulder with all who Serve. The current total for 2011 stands at
an incredible £1,268,053.40. (as of 20/2/12)
We always need new volunteers - Poppy People - to
assist with Poppy Appeal collecting in Kent.
Without volunteer collectors out there on the streets, without
appeal organisers planning the collections, this great cause - that
helps thousands of ex-Service men and women every year - would
grind to a halt.
And we urgently need to recruit more people as many of our
current volunteers are retiring from active duty. Add to this the
ever increasing demand on the Legion's services and you can see we
need your help more than ever.
