The Poppy Appeal in Herefordshire

Lord Lieutenant's awards Presentation July 6th 2011

A stream of local stalwarts from Ross-on-Wye were amongst those who collected certificates in recognition of their outstanding contribution in fundraising for the Poppy Appeal from Lady Darnley, HM Lord Lieutenant of Hereford. She presented The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal awards at the Town Hall on Wednesday, July 6th.
In her address, Lady Darnley said the amount raised by Poppy Collectors across the County was 'truly outstanding' and placed Herefordshire in the top two of the national table.
Sue and Brian Lampert, linchpins in the local poppy appeal fundraising efforts, were awarded a National Certificate of Appreciation for, amongst other endeavours, opening a charity shop - and raising an amazing £1,211.28 - and setting up and running Twitter and Facebook for the Herefordshire Poppy Appeal.

Liz Parker - Community Fundraiser Herefordshire

 Liz Parker

The role of Community Fundraiser was created for Herefordshire last Summer, with Liz Parker being the first incumbent. Liz is contracted to work 2 ½ days a week and is home-based. Her primary role is to support and assist all 31 Poppy Appeal Organisers (PAO) in Herefordshire and to help increase the revenue for the Poppy Appeal. When asked how she is settling into her new role, she said 'I am privileged to be part of an already very strong team of dedicated individuals who work throughout the year and who do such sterling work during Remembrance Tide.'

'Our financial figures reflect the hard work carried out by all of the PAO's and their team of collectors' she continued. 'Herefordshire has increased it's Poppy Appeal total again this year and we are also once again one of the top three counties for the whole of the UK for the amount raised per capita.'

Liz would be delighted to hear of any fundraising events that you may have organised to celebrate The Royal British Legion's 90th Anniversary.

Raising Money for the Poppy Appeal

Running for The Royal British Legion          Local Fundraiser

Each year, in late October early November, an army of volunteers take to the streets with poppies and collecting boxes to raise money, amounting to millions of pounds, for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The Charity's beneficiaries depend on the generosity of the public at all times of the year but in particular during the Poppy Appeal.

The money provides valuable help and support to serving and ex-service men and women and their dependants.

Herefordshire's generosity is notable.  The county raises well above the national average in funds for the Poppy Appeal. £165,251.92 was collected in Herefordshire for the Poppy Appeal 2008/2009, which represents an increase of 6.21% over the previous year's collection.  This in turn represents 92p raised by each person living in the County.

(Herefordshire's population is approximately 179,300; figures released in August 2009 by the Office for National Statistics)

New volunteers are always welcome to help with collecting in Herefordshire both in the towns and city and in the more remote rural areas.

Please contact our County Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator, Mick Tuerena, if this is a role you are interested in.
