The 2010 Poppy Appeal has raised a staggering £36 million, reaching its target and smashing all previous records

The figure is over £1 million up on the year before, showing the nation's heartfelt support for our brave Armed Forces through the annual Poppy Appeal.

The number of poppies distributed during the last Poppy Appeal also rose to an incredible 45 million, up 3 million on the previous year. This figure does not include wreaths and other Poppy items.

The Legion's Director of Fundraising Russell Thompson OBE said: "Each year the Legion is overwhelmed at the amount of public support for the Appeal. People are genuinely humbled by the job our Armed Forces do for the nation every single day, and donating for a Poppy is the nation's way or giving something back to them."

Mr Thompson thanked the army of 350,000 volunteers nationwide who collect for the Poppy Appeal, rain or shine. "Without our legion of collectors, we would not be able to raise the vital funding we need to care for the Armed Forces family day in, day out. In recent years, we have seen a new generation of volunteers out collecting, no doubt moved by the involvement of British Armed Forces in current conflicts."
