The Legion and young people

If you are between 14 and 18 years old and are interested in the Armed Services and the work of The Royal British Legion, why not join us as a Youth Member?

Youth Membership

Youth Membership offers the opportunity to take part in Royal British Legion parades as a youth standard bearer - and the possibility of taking part in the annual festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.

You can learn to play a musical instrument, become a Majorette, or develop your musical skills in the friendly atmosphere of a Royal British Legion band - and experience all the thrill of public performances.

You can even work towards the Duke of Edinburgh's Award by taking 'access credits' offered through the Legion.

And if you are already a member of an organisation like the Guides, Scouts or one of the Cadet organisations you can affiliate the whole group to your local Royal British Legion branch.

To join The Royal British Legion as a Youth Member costs only £2.50 a year.

Youth Standard Bearer

As a Youth Member you can be trained as a Royal British Legion Youth Standard Bearer. If you are good at it, there are competitions between branches and counties which lead to The National Youth Standard Bearer Competition. The winner of this competition holds the position of The Royal British Legion National Youth Standard Bearer and attends events such as the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London each year.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Royal British Legion is authorised to issue inserts known as "Access Credits" in the Services and Skills Sections in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

If you are completing the Service Section of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, working with the Legion offers the chance to take part in the following, recognised activities:

Fund-raising (particularly through the Poppy Appeal)
Helping to meet the community and social needs of the elderly and infirm within the ex-Service community
Helping sick or handicapped people within the ex-Service community through hospital or nursing home volunteer work
Visiting physically handicapped children of ex-Service families
Assisting with practical activities including gardening, shopping and socialising with the local ex-Service community
Assistance with the assessment of individual needs within the ex-Service community. For more information contact The National Youth Officer.

Youth bands and majorette troupes

A majorette troupe The Royal British Legion has a number of youth bands and majorette troupes in England and Wales. In addition some adult bands are happy to accept youth members and may even teach you to play a musical instrument.

Find one local to you and telephone them for more information. Or simply contact the National Youth Officer (+44 (0)20 7973 7287) who can advise you if there is a band or majorette troupe in your area.

You must be a Youth Associate Member of The Royal British Legion once you are established in the band. You can join some bands or majorette troupes below the age of 14 but you will be expected to join become a Youth Associate Member when you reach 14.
