Caroline Wood is looking for Leslie Charles Roots- known as 'Jimmy'
Last seen: Missing in action in air raid over Scholven- German Oil refinery - Lancaster LM 620 night of 18-19 July 1944
Leslie Roots (1921-1944) - RAF Volunteer Squadron 100 Navigator Flight Sergeant 1391821- was my father's brother and I am researching his story for our family history. Both my parents and grandparents have passed away so I have noone alive to assist but would love to hear from anyone who knew him or flew with him. He trained at 44 Air School, Grahamstown, South Africa in 1943 and met Sue Krieger whilst there. His Lancaster plane was shot down in action in an air raid over Scholven (German Oil refinery) on the night of 18-19 July 1944. The Lancaster flight left from RAF Waltham, Grimsby and all crew were reported as missing, presumed dead- buried in a communal grave in Reichswald, Kleve. His crew that night were Sgt John Todd, FS David Martyn Jones, Sgt Eric William Hayes, FO Trevor Garrick Page, Sgt D Henderson, Sgt Robert Watson - and Flt Sergeant leslie Charles Roots. Any information in respect of Leslie or any of his crew members would be really appreciated.
