Lee and Nicki Wickham

Lee & Nicki WickhamLee served in the Pioneer Corps between 1999 and 2003 and was a physical trainer. His regiment was one of the first into Iraq.

While on night patrol he fell down a sandbank and ruptured tendons in his leg, which affected his knee. The injury resulted in him being medically discharged from the Army in 2004.

Lee has had four surgical procedures but is still in constant pain and uses a stick to walk around. He's been medically advised to have his leg amputated, which he's resisted so far.

Working in association with SSAFA, the Legion has provided a loan of £30k to his local council to adapt his home with wheelchair access, a wet room and relocating a bedroom downstairs making it easier for him to perform everyday tasks.

"The Legion's intervention means that it's easier for me to get around at home, which just makes family life that bit easier for me, for my wife and the kids."

Home adaptations

Applying for state assistance for home adaptations due to disability or mobility problems (eg wheelchair access or stairlifts) can be a complicated and lengthy process.

The Legion can help eligible beneficiaries to apply for local authority grants and monitor the progress of applications to local authorities on their behalf. Under some circumstances we provide financial assistance for adaptations.

If you need assistance with home adaptation or any other Legion services, call Legionline on 08457 725 725 or email info@britishlegion.org.uk.
