War Widows Grant-in-Aid Scheme

war widow at a grave The War Widows Grant-in-Aid Scheme is a Government operated initiative which enables war widows and widowers to make one visit to the grave or memorial of their Service husband or wife who died during overseas military service between 1914 and 1967.

Set up in 1985, the scheme is administered by the travel arm of The Royal British Legion, Remembrance Travel and covers the cost of all travel and accommodation.  A carer is also welcome to accompany the widow or widower, for which the cost is covered.

The Legion has already helped to take widows and widowers to visit graves and memorials in a variety of countries including key European areas such as Belgium, France or Italy as well as in the Far East, for example India and Hong Kong. We have taken over 4,000 people to over 30 different countries.

Most of the visits are group visits, accompanied by a tour leader and medical professional but individual arrangements can also be made.

For further information contact Poppy Travel (details above) or visit www.poppytravel.org.uk.

Poppy Travel for Schools

Advice can be given on pre-tour work to help students and staff gain the maximum benefit from their trip, and tours are accompanied by an expert guide with lectures, on-site briefings, videos etc to enhance and complement the curriculum. All arrangements include a free place for teachers on the ratio of one to ten students.
