The Battle Back Centre (Lilleshall)

The Royal British Legion is providing £27 million to establish and operate The Battle Back Centre (Lilleshall) as part of its commitment to support wounded, injured and sick Service personnel.

The Centre is part of the MoD's Defence Recovery Capability programme.

I've done things at The Battle Back Centre that I thought I'd never be able to do again, including rock climbing, caving and kayaking. Everything was adapted to suit my needs and my personal programme concentrated on my own rehabilitation. Simply an amazing place.
Former Army Corporal Andy Reid

What we do

What we do at The Battle Back CentreThe Battle Back Centre provides sports and adventurous activities for wounded, injured and sick Service men and women from all three Services.

All our activities promote self-confidence and improve motivation to aid recovery.

Our tailored programmes help with both physical and psychological challenges.

The Centre exists to help people achieve their best possible recovery and either return to Service duty or make a smooth transition to civilian life.

This has given me the massive confidence boost I needed.

How it works

How it works at The Battleback CentreThe Battle Back Centre is an Army led Centre that is funded and delivered by The Royal British Legion. Led by world-class coaching staff, our activities are challenging, but safe and enjoyable.

They include climbing, watersports, caving, wheelchair basketball, clay shooting and archery.

All our activities build camaraderie with others going through similar challenges.

We have high quality residential accommodation for 24 people at a time, with 16 rooms fully equipped for those who need wheelchair access or have other requirements.

The Team

The Team at The Battle Back CentreThe Centre has been established by the Legion at the National Sports Centre, Lilleshall in the West Midlands.

Army staff look after the health, safety, security and welfare of Service participants attending the courses.

Coaching expertise is provided by the Carnegie School of Sport and Carnegie Great Outdoors and independent evaluation of the programme is conducted by Leeds Metropolitan University, Institute for Sport, Physical Activity and Leisure.

The encouragement I received from the staff and others on the course was fantastic.
