The Gulf War Group - campaigning for Veterans of the Gulf War 1990-91

When veterans of the Gulf War 1990-91 first started to report a
high number of illnesses, veterans' organisations and concerned
parliamentarians formed the Gulf War Group to consider the issues
and to bring them to the attention of the public and the
government.
The Gulf War Group is a single interest
group. Representatives are drawn from veterans'
organisations, medical and scientific fields and parliamentarians.
Importantly the Group also includes veterans.
We continue with our 15-year campaign for improvements to
research and support for Gulf War veterans.
In 2008 veterans received a formal apology from the Government
for their past treatment. In June the Legion hosted a parliamentary
event on the impat of medical courtermeasures on health.
More recently, the United States have released a review of all
research into Gulf War illnesses over the last two years. This
provides clear guidance on where further research funding should be
directed.
We continue to press for improvements by the Ministry of
Defence, including the changes below:
- A comprehensive research strategy with funding for Gulf
War illnesses particularly for objecive health tests and
avenues for effective treatment.
- An additional one-off payment for Gulf War veterans
suffering with conditions linked to their Service. We are
asking for an ex gratia payment for the failures of successive
Governaments to fulfil their duty of care to this group of
veterans.
