The Legion's welfare research information

Gulf WarThe Welfare Department at The Royal British Legion campaigns on a wide range of issues that affect the serving and ex-Service community.

We have conducted detailed research into the condition of the ex-Service community in Britain and Europe (most recently in Spain) and have a long standing campaign on Gulf War Illnesses.

Health, welfare & social needs of the Armed Forces community - research 2010

During 2010 the Legion carried out extensive research to examine the health, welfare and social needs of our beneficiaries. The work included desktop reviews of existing research, updating of data models, extensive interviews with beneficiaries and a detailed survey of our clients.

This research is being used to help us plan for the future. The findings of our research will be used to help us develop our existing support services and introduce new services to meet the changing needs of our beneficiaries. In particular, we will change how we work to ensure our services are meeting the needs of our beneficiaries, are helping people to live independent lives and are of the highest quality.

Some of the reports are available on our Legion Research page, but if you would like further information please get in contact with our Welfare Division.

Our research survey of over 5,000 clients included a prize draw for those who responded. Click here for a list of those who were successful in the prize draw.

Associated reports

At the request of the Standing Committee of European Affairs (SCEA) of the World Veterans' Federation (WVF) a 'Veterans' Health & Welfare Co-Operation Information Steering Group' (VHWCISG) has identified four important and relevant issues with regard to the health and welfare of veterans in the affiliated European organisations and countries.

This steering group has identified resources that can provide the members-affiliates with information about the results of research that has been carried out on these issues. A working group is continuing this work, preparing methods to disseminate information and to make these resources accessible for SCEA-affiliates.

The report of the Steering Group, presented at the SCEA meeting in Lisbon in April 2008, is available here in pdf format.
