The Legion's other Policy issues

In addition to our main campaigns, The Royal British Legion is continually working with all political parties to further the cause of the serving and ex-Service communities. Some of our current policy issues are outlined below.

For more information about any of these subjects, please contact the Public Policy Unit of The Royal British Legion.

Nuclear Test Veterans

We are working with the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association (BNTVA) to ensure veterans and their families can take part in the MoD studies into health problems suffered by personnel present at test sites, their children and grandchildren.

Access to Social Housing

In order to tackle problems in accessing social rented housing experienced by some veterans and their families, we are calling on the Government to award some priority to those who have served in the Armed Forces.

Statutory Homelessness Policy

England is dependent on a subjective test that allows local authorities to avoid providing assistance to homeless ex-Service personnel. The English legislation should be changed to that used in Wales, which provides an objective test.

Access to compensation for mis-sold endowment mortgages

Many members of HM Armed Forces were mis-sold mortgage endowments from UK firms in the 1980s and 90s whilst stationed overseas.

Unlike those people who took on these types of mortgages whilst living in the UK, they have no access to compensation. The Legion is calling on the Government to address this injustice.
