Calendar of events
Every Friday evening from
5.45pm until about 7.00pm branch members and guests meet
in the lounge bar of The Duke, the village inn, for a lively
chat over a beer. All are most welcome.
Below is a list of dates for your
diary on what's happening in the Bratton Branch of The Royal
British Legion:
Friday 17 December 2010
Branch Members' Chrismas
Dinner in the Duke Inn. Further details to be
published.
Saturday 29 January 2011
The first of the Branch's 2011 Poppy Appeal talks will be given
on Saturday 29 January by Mr Paul Chapman who is an expert on the
life and work of the artist Stanley Spencer. Spencer's work
includes a considerable number of paintings of scenes relating to
the World Wars and his most famous work is probably that housed in
the Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere near Newbury.
Further details of this are on part of the National Trust website
at http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-sandhammemorialchapel.htm.
The talk will be held in the Church Institute. Those
attending are invited to arrive from 5.40 pm and they will be able
to partake of a glass or two of wine or a soft drink. Mr
Chapman will speak from 6 pm for about 45 minutes and will then
take questions. The talk should end at about 7.15
pm. The cost will be £5, the same as last year, but please
remember these talks are in aid of the Poppy Appeal so please give
generously. Those who would like to prolong the evening's
entertainment are encouraged to move on to The Duke. If you
would like to book in for supper, please phone Andy and Lynn at The
Duke, saying that you would like to join the British Legion table:
you will be expected and made very welcome!
If you would like to attend this talk, please email Colonel
(Retd) Mike Manson at mike@manson1.fsnet.co.uk
saying how many will be in your party so that we can prepare
accordingly. However you are welcome to come along without
notice if necessary.
Saturday 26 February 2011
The second of the 2011 Poppy Appeal
talks will be given on Saturday 26 February by Col (Retd)
Christopher Newbould on the War Graves Commission and Battlefield
Tours. The precise content of this talk has yet to be decided
but should be published shortly. However the format will be
exactly as for previous talks: held in the Church Institute; arrive
from 5.40 pm for wine; talk at 6 pm followed by questions, ending
about 7.15 pm.
We will entertain the speaker afterwards with supper in The Duke
and everyone who would like to join that hosting party should book
directly with Andy and Lyn.
Saturday 26 March 2011
The third and final 2011 Poppy Appeal talk will be given on
Saturday 26 March 2011 by Lt Col (Retd) Jim Condon on personal
stories behind the award of some medals. Again, the precise
content has yet to be decided but this will be an interesting
follow on from Jim's talk about medals in general which he gave
earlier this year.
The format will be exactly as for previous talks: held in the
Church Institute; arrive from 5.40 pm for wine; talk at 6 pm
followed by questions, ending about 7.15 pm.
We will entertain the speakers afterwards with supper in The
Duke and everyone who would like to join that hosting party should
book directly with Andy and Lyn.

Jubillee Hall with an Eve Bird Curry on Saturday 16 April. More
