Recipes for Remembrance - Legion launches children's cookbook

15 September 2011

flossiecrums.jpgThe Royal British Legion is launching Recipes for Remembrance, a perfect pocket-sized baking book with recipes from children's baking star Flossie Crums™, which will help families, schools and particularly children mark its 90th anniversary Poppy Appeal - while participating in and experiencing Remembrance.

Says Helen Hill, of The Royal British Legion Learning Team, "As part of our role as the national custodian of Remembrance, the Legion reaches out to over 2 million children across the country each year. We saw our landmark 90th birthday and Poppy Appeal as a great way of using baking to gently introduce families with children of 10 or younger to the importance of Remembrance where children engage in a positive way. Funds from the sale of the book will be used to help British Forces families, both now and in the future."

The result of an inspirational link up with Flossie Crums creator Helen Nathan, the full colour book features children's baking 'star' Flossie Crums and her brother Billie talking about the Legion, its work and the role of the Poppy. It also unveils 10 new recipes divided into 'Easy Peasy', 'Not Too Tricky' and 'Worth the Effort' sections.

Beautifully photographed and illustrated these include 'Mini Poppy Cupcakes', 'No Need to Knead Poppyseed Bread', a special 'Eleven O'Clock Remembrance Day Cake' and even a 'Welcome Home Cupcake Tower' for Service men and women returning home from a tour of duty.

Recipes for Remembrance is a small format paperback 15 cm x 11 cm in size. It even includes templates at the back of the book which will allow children to cut out a Poppy shape in icing and A 'Welcome Home' banner for the cupcake tower.

The book is available from Poppy Shop, the Legion's online store (www.poppyshop.org.uk) and soon via Flossie's site www.flossiecrums.com and all of the book's profits and the thousands of pounds it hopes to raise will go to supporting the Armed Forces and their families today and for the rest of their lives.

Although this is Flossie Crums' first book with the Legion, Helen Nathan has already written three other children's books, Flossie Crums and the Fairies' Cupcake Ball, Flossie Crums and the Enchanted Cookie Tree and Flossie Crums and the Royal Spotty Dotty Cake, all priced at £8.99 and available from all good bookshops and Amazon.
