10 November 2011
'In the Footsteps of War: Ninety years of Remembrance' is a revised edition of a collection of moving, personal war stories being released in time for Remembrance 2011. The book has been collated by Ni Bell to celebrate the 90th anniversary of The Royal British Legion.
The stories have been written by a wide variety of
people from all across the globe. They each share their own take on
war and Remembrance showing us all that no matter what
conflict what war is being fought it connects us all.
Contributing authors range from war heroes to celebrities and everyday people. They include: His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales who has given his permission and support to include his speech given at the memorial ceremony at Grosvenor Square on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks; The Rt Hon David Cameron MP, Prime Minister; The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu; Paul Deprey, Superintendent, World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument at Pearl Harbour; Leon Kamran who was witness to the aftermath of the assassination of Benaza Bhutto; Terry Waite CBE who shares his story of his close friend Harold going back to the island where he was held prisoner during the war to discover that now a supermarket has been built on it.
There are traditional stories of Remembrance from Barbara Parker, Angelo Marcos, Guia Olivar and others who tell moving accounts from World War II. Stories from other conflicts including The Falklands, Borneo and Afghanistan are also included, as well as a contribution from Peter Francis, Head of External Communication for the Commonwealth and War Graves Commission who describes the role his team does, in addition to working alongside The Royal British Legion.
Ni Bell stated, "This project started because of my Grandma. She gave me the gift of education and instilled in me why we should not forget. It is my hope that this book will help continue to pass on those values given to me by my grandparents in a way that is accessible and easy to relate to for future generations. By speaking out and asking questions we can educate, inform and learn."
The stories in this book are real. They illustrate how important it is to remember our past both nationally and as part of a growing global community. All profits from sales will be donated to The Royal British Legion.
"On this anniversary, we are drawn to you, in our thoughts and in our prayers, knowing that we cannot change the past, but that through struggling to find a light that can lighten the darkness we may ultimately bring healing the world so desperately needs…" HRH The Prince of Wales
"By buying a copy of this book and bringing it to the attention of your friends you will be playing your part in the relief of suffering." Terry Waite CBE
