Forces families’ cupcake day launches Legion’s Recipes for Remembrance book
17 October 2011
Toddlers from British
forces families helped launch a new cook book called
Recipes for Remembrance at a cake decorating day
in Staffordshire last week.
The children, many with mums and one with her serving dad in attendance, made two recipes from the book - poppy yum yum pops and toffee poppy cupcakes, topped off with edible glittery poppies.
The Royal British Legion's Recipes for Remembrance, is a perfect pocket-sized baking book with recipes from children's baking star Flossie Crums, which will help families, schools and particularly children mark its 90th Anniversary Poppy Appeal - while participating in and experiencing Remembrance.
Helen Nathan, author and creator of Flossie Crums and Recipes for Remembrance, was thrilled by the enthusiasm of the children, as well as their creativity. She said: "I was desperately keen for Flossie Crums to do something for The Royal British Legion because of the great work they do supporting Service people. That's how the idea of the recipe book came about.
"Meeting the army families face to face however, and hearing about the day to day issues they deal with, made me even more determined to support the Legion and help these families."
Helen Hill of The Royal British Legion Learning Team, "As part of our role as the national custodian of Remembrance, the Legion reaches out to over two million children across the country each year. We saw our landmark 90th birthday and Poppy Appeal as a great way of using baking to gently introduce families with children of 10 or younger to the importance of Remembrance where children engage in a positive way. Funds from the sale of the book will be used to help British Forces families, both now and in the future."
The full colour pocket-sized book features Flossie Crums and her brother Billie talking about the Legion, its work and the role of the Poppy. It also unveils 10 new recipes divided into 'Easy Peasy', 'Not Too Tricky' and 'Worth the Effort' sections.
Beautifully photographed and illustrated these include 'Mini Poppy Cupcakes', 'No Need to Knead Poppyseed Bread', a special 'Eleven O'Clock Remembrance Day Cake' and even a 'Welcome Home Cupcake Tower" for Service men and women returning home from a tour of duty.
'Recipes for Remembrance' is a small format paperback 15 cm x 11 cm in size. It even includes templates at the back of the book which will allow children to cut out a Poppy shape in icing and a 'Welcome Home' banner for the cupcake tower.
The book is available from www.poppyshop.org.uk and via Flossie's site www.flossiecrums.com and all of the book's profits and the thousands of pounds it hopes to raise will go to supporting the Armed Forces and their families today and for the rest of their lives.
