New welfare homes open at RAF Brize Norton

18 November 2011

Group Captain Dom Stamp cuts the ribbon with Linda Flecknell from the LegionRAF personnel and Royal British Legion special guests attended the opening ceremony of four recently refurbished welfare houses at RAF Brize Norton today. The houses will provide an essential retreat for Service personnel with a variety of welfare needs and will offer a comfortable environment for single parents who wish to spend quality time with their children.

The refurbishment of two units was made possible by a Royal British Legion grant of £55,684 to RAF Brize Norton earlier this year. The grant is part of the Legion's external grants programme, which this year has totalled over £2million. The other two units were funded by the RAF Benevolent Fund.

RAF Brize Norton is the largest Station in the Royal Air Force, employing around 3,900 Service personnel and over 600 civilians. Having recently taken over from Royal Wootton Bassett as the receiving base for repatriations, RAF Brize Norton is set to become a focal point in the repatriation legacy.

Station Commander, Group Captain Domonic Stamp said, "We are incredibly grateful for the support of The Royal British Legion. As an extremely busy station, I've no doubt these houses will be of great use to all personnel on the base."

Linda Flecknell, the Legion's Oxfordshire County Manager said, "We are excited and delighted for this opportunity to work together in collaboration with others, for the benefit of serving personnel. The refurbishment has transformed these houses into inviting and comfortable places where Service personnel can receive any help or support they might need."
