Legion money advice service scoops top award

12 May 2010

The Royal British Legion is celebrating being awarded the "Best Partnership Award" from the IMA (Institute of Money Advisers), for recognition of its highly successful Benefits and Money Advice Service.

The scheme, in partnership with the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, Citizens Advice, and Citizens Advice Northern Ireland was set up in December 2007 and has so far assisted over 12,000 serving and ex-serving individuals as well as dependants, with financial outcomes of over £32.7 million - helping them to secure benefits, writing off debts, and providing general money advice.

There are currently 53 Benefits and Money Advisers operating out of a number of Citizens Advice Bureaux across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including an in-house team of Legion advisers, to offer money advice to those currently serving in the Armed Forces, and service leavers as well as their dependants. Additionally, there are now several advisers specifically providing assistance on Armed Forces bases in garrison towns.

Alison Wyman, Benefits and Money Advice Manager at the Legion said: "We're thrilled to receive this recognition of the BMA Service from the IMA who promote excellence in money advice.

"The RAFBF, Citizens Advice, and Citizens Advice Northern Ireland were also represented at the ceremony on 10 May where we collected the award, and it was a great honour to be present to receive the accolade.

"The service continues to go from strength to strength, and an award from the Institute of Money Advisers illustrates its prevalence."

The IMA hold an annual conference for money advisers, and each year they hold Performance Awards. There were 5 categories of award, and this year the Legion won "Best Partnership Award" along with the RAFBF, Citizens Advice, and Citizens Advice Northern Ireland for the Benefits and Money Advice Service.
