A-maze-ing poppy labyrinth gets the green light at Catterick Garrison

16 September 2011

Funding from The Royal British Legion has paved the way for a labyrinth in Catterick Garrison which will feature a poppy at its centre.

Thanks to a grant of £25,000 from the Legion, work will begin next month on the 15-metre labyrinth which will act as a focal point for families at the Garrison's Coronation Park, giving them a much-needed place for peace and reflection.

The centrepiece of the labyrinth will be a poppy emblem carved in stonework to signify the Legion's support in the project and represent the charity's enduring legacy with the Forces at Catterick.

A local artist will be commissioned to work alongside the Garrison community and schools to engrave the Legion's poppy emblem.

The project is the brainchild of Janet Reeve, business development manager at Catterick Garrison's Army Welfare Service.

Janet said: "It is fantastic news that the labyrinth project can go ahead thanks to the amazing support of The Royal British Legion.

"The labyrinth will be a place where people can spend time and pause for reflection which is especially important in difficult times as these. The labyrinth will be somewhere that brings together peace and enjoyment.

"Placing a Poppy at the hub of the labyrinth represents the Legion's mission to put welfare at the heart of its work."

Chris Cunningham, the Legion's county manager for North and East Yorkshire said: "The Legion continues to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of the Armed Forces family which it has done for 90 years, and is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with those who serve.

"Together, the labyrinth and park will be a gathering point for our Armed Forces families and a place of tranquility and peacefulness."
