Surrey reaches £1 million in its Poppy Appeal

27 April 2010

This morning Surrey County Royal British Legion reached its sought after £1 million target when the 2009 Poppy Appeal total for the county reached £1,000,005.73, a 10.79% increase on the 2008 total.

Canon Peter Bruinvels, County Manager, expressed his thanks to all 129 Surrey and Greater London South West Poppy Appeal Organisers and their loyal band of 3,750 collectors who contributed to this record total. Whether they collected £186.36 or £41,878.59 every penny counts. He also thanked the 750 Cadets who collected £84,942.18 in this year's Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey Poppy Cadet Competition.

Mrs Sarah Goad JP, Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, commenting on the news said: "It's fantastic news. Everyone has worked so very hard to achieve this remarkable total. We really need these sums to support our forces and ex-Service men and women, at home and abroad."

Mr Nick Buckley, Head of Poppy Appeal, said: "All at Poppy Appeal HQ in Aylesford, Kent send our thanks and best wishes to the vast number of volunteers in the County who made this possible."

Surrey Royal British Legion remains at the forefront in helping Servicemen, ex-Service men and women and their dependants in financial need through Poppy Support, an ever growing need in Surrey and this great total raised in the Poppy Appeal allows this work to continue.

The national Poppy Appeal total has also broken previous records. It is now over £32 million, breaking the 2008 Appeal total of £31 million, and contributing to the £1.2 million spent each week by the Legion on it's welfare work.
