Prime Minister receives first poppy
20 October 2009
The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has been presented with a poppy ahead of the official launch of our annual Poppy Appeal which will take place on Thursday.
Mr Brown posed with his wife, Sarah, and volunteer poppy collectors on the steps of No 10 Downing Street this morning.
The photo shows Michael Clarke, from Birmingham, who has been a volunteer for 10 years and is a consistent holder of collection records including Volunteer of the Year in 2005; Ann Bedford, coordinator of the Legion's 310 Greater London collection areas; Jess Simmonds and Sophie Pain, both recent university graduates, with the Prime Minister and his wife.
Three of the volunteers are wearing yellow 'Stand With Me' T-shirts, echoing the message of the this year's Poppy People campaign.
The national launch of the 2009 Poppy Appeal will take place at Horse Guards Parade, London on Thursday 22 October at 12 noon. Further details are available here.
