Poppy Appeal support from Mayor of London
22 October 2009
Poppy collector Elvi Morrison, handed Mayor of London Boris Johnson his poppy at City Hall this afternoon. Like many others across the capital Mr Johnson will wear the poppy over the coming weeks to show his support to the British Armed Forces.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said, "The commitment and courage of our Service men and women, past and present, is an inspiration to us all. By wearing the poppy each year we offer a simple, but powerful tribute to the heroism and sacrifice they have shown in protecting our country and people around the world."
The 2009 Poppy Appeal, launched earlier today at Horseguards Parade, aims to raise £31 million to help the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces and their families - today and for the rest of their lives.
The Poppy Appeal relies on volunteer collectors. Anyone wanting to collect in the London area for two hours should email londonpoppyappeal@britishlegion.org.uk or call 020 7582 5929.
The Royal British Legion is the leading UK charity providing direct, practical support for wounded heroes and bereaved Armed Forces families.
