Lloyd's Branch of the Legion smashes record for Poppy Appeal collection
24 November 2009
The Lloyd's Branch of The Royal British Legion has smashed its previous record of £20,000 to collect £60,000 in a single day.
The collection, thought to be the highest ever by a single branch over a 24 hour period, far exceeded the branch's expectations.
Benjamin Hancock, London Poppy Day organiser and former Grenadier Guards officer said: "Last year was fantastic, we raised £20,000, so to raise £60,000 has far exceeded what we ever thought was possible and is a reflection of the generosity of Londoners."
Soldiers, sailors, airmen and reservists from all three branches of the Armed Forces came together to join with City workers from the financial services sector to break the record and do their bit to make the 2009 Poppy Appeal a success.
Mark Drummond-Brady, Chairman of the Lloyds Branch said: "Lloyd's is the last trade branch of The Royal British Legion and we are extremely proud to have such a proactive group of members. We have gone from strength to strength and to raise £60,000 in one day is incredible, next year we hope to break the record again."
The Royal British Legion's Director of National Events and Fundraising, Russell Thompson said: "The Poppy Appeal this year has been about helping the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces and their families – today and for the rest of their lives. Lloyd's have done their bit and we hope it inspires others to do the same next year."
