Legion welcomes new honour for victims of conflict

01 July 2009

The Royal British Legion today welcomed the news that those who have died in combat since 1948 will be honoured with a medal and scroll.

The medal for those service personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in operations or by terrorism has won the approval of Her Majesty the Queen, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.

The Elizabeth Cross will be granted to the next of kin of Armed Forces personnel in a mark of national recognition for their loss.

Speaking after the announcement Stuart Gendall, Director of Corporate Communications for The Royal British Legion said "All those who risk their lives in conflict deserve the whole nation's recognition and thanks."

"It is a sad reality of war that there will be men and women who don't make it home or whose lives are forever changed by battle and it is right that they are honoured."

"With current conflicts increasing the need on our Armed Forces they and their loved ones must never be far from our thoughts."
