Legion tops social media survey
19 April 2011
The Royal British Legion has topped a national survey of charities ranked by their social media presence.
The nfpSynergy's Social Media League Table compares the top 50 UK charities on the basis of Facebook 'likes', Twitter followers and YouTube subscribers.
The Royal British Legion leads the table by a
substantial margin with a social media presence of 1,889,331
followers. In second place was the Tate with 531,221 followers,
while third place was held by the RSPCA with 360,292 followers.
The survey notes that the UK leads the way in use of social media by charities, and that UK charities make much more use of social media than UK corporations.
"Social media is the great leveller when it comes to communications. It provides a cheap and relatively simple way to reach and engage with supporters, and can be used to great effect by any organisation of any size."
Largely responsible for the results is the Facebook fan page 'Maximum Respect for the British Armed Forces supporting The Royal British Legion' (MaxRes) which is managed in house by The Royal British Legion. The page acts as an engaging and informative online community where people share their messages of support and hope for our troops.
MaxRes is the seventh largest charitable fan page in the world and the largest fan page in the world that discusses political issues.
The Royal British Legion's online avatar Poppy Legion has 3,752 friends on Facebook, a Twitter account (@PoppyLegion) with 4,880 followers, and maintains 'LegionLive', a daily blog found on www.legionlive.org.uk. It also maintains a Youtube account on www.youtube.com/royalbritishlegion which ranked 12th in the survey.
Robert Lee, Head of Media and Campaigns for the Legion, said: "Social media is a powerful platform for The Royal British Legion to engage with a new and engaged audience of volunteers, fundraisers, and advocates for the Armed Forces community."
