HM The Queen opens new Legion head office

27 February 2009

Her Majesty The Queen met with wounded serving and ex-Service personnel and Service families when she opened our new Head Office, Haig House, in London today.

Beneficiaries of the Legion who were presented to The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh at Haig House include those injured recently in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as former conflicts.

The Legion's National President, Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely also presented prominent supporters of the charity such as newsreader Alastair Stewart, along with soprano Hayley Westenra who helped to launch the 2008 Poppy Appeal from Basra.

HM The Queen with George Taylor The move to new headquarters in Borough comes at a time when the Legion – which celebrates its 89th anniversary this year – finds the need for its welfare services as contemporary as ever before.

"The Legion is not just about those who served in wars past but about campaigning and caring for current service personnel and their families," said Director General Chris Simpkins.

"There has been a 30 per cent increase in requests for help from those under the age of 35 and the Legion has risen to the challenge of meeting their needs thanks to the public's support."

More photos of the event are available in our Haig House opening photo gallery.
